Questions

1. What is the diffference between a DATA FRAME and a LAYER?
The difference is the Data Frame is composed of the Layers that occupy the same geographic space. A Layer is a geographic object or feature like a river or             building that is displayed on the Data Frame. There can be many Layers displayed on the Data Frame.

2. What is the difference between a ".mxd" file and a ".mxt" file?
The difference is that the mxd is a data file signifiied by the d and the mxt is a text file signified by the t. It is a simple way to distinguish the two types of                         information within the files. The mxd can only be read by the ArcGIS program, where as the text file can be read in other programs.

3. What is the difference between a SHAPEFILE (.shp) and a LAYER FILE (.lyr)?
The difference is a Shapefile stores one feature in its file of geographic features. While a Layerfile is similiar to a Layer, the file is able to store all the layers of a             map with the same goegraphic information.

4. What is the difference between the DATA VIEW  and LAYOUT VIEW?
The difference is that Data View only displays on the computer screen the active window from Layout View. In Layout View, the entire page is displayed which         can be made of many slides put together for a poster, it shows the big picture, where as Data View only shows one picture at a time.
