Cardboard Boat Regatta

Team Name: Cruisin' Turtles

Purpose: Work as a team to design and construct a buoyant vessel that can be navigated in an open body of water. The teams paddled their vessels in the Sweet Briar Lake powered solely by their hands and/or feet.

Constraints and Criteria:

As a team, Sara Sheppard and I, first derived a Problem Statement containing major constraints and criteria as well as outlining our aim to solving the task at hand successfully. We then came up with a list of preliminary ideas and refined them down to two designs. We completed analysis on the designs and built small scale models for testing. Afterwards, we arrived at our final design. Once we had our design in place, we built three full scale models for testing and further refinement.

We learned to not only work around each other's differences in opinion and attitudes, but to take pride in our work as a team. As a team, Sara and I felt confident in our vessel and named it for our Physics Professor. In the end, our boat never left the dock, since we tipped over under the pressure, however, we both learned copious skills that will help us work as a team to design and implement projects in the future.

My strengths during this project was the mathematics and analysis of the design. Sara compensated for my weakness in grammar and report writing skills. We both learned from each other and are now more than ready to take on these tasks with future assignments and projects.
