One could infer that the Mormons, who were persecuted all throughout the United States, identified with the Jewish people who had been persecuted all through history. This type of identity for a newly found religion would give the followers a sense of security in a world that did accept their religious beliefs readily. The similarities between the two faiths would almost validate the MormonТs faith by comparing it to a religion which has existed for centuries and is usually considered to be the chosen religion of God. By creating these roots that began with Judaism, the Mormons gained a respect and a history that probably wouldnТt have occurred without the prestige of the Jewish faith behind them. To begin with, the Mormon leader, John Smith, found the holy tablets (that had the Book of Mormon written on them) inside of a mountain that an angel had led him to. This is quite similar to the tablets given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai, but is only one of many similarities found between the two faiths. Another facet of faith that is interesting within the Mormon religion is the emphasis placed on the Jewish prophets and patriarchs and the time period in which they lived. УThat he has spoken unto the Jews, by the mouth of his holy prophetsЕthat they shall be restored to the true churchЕand shall be established in all their lands of promise,Ф (2 Nephi 9:2).
