1. What is the difference between the DATA VIEW and LAYOUT VIEW?
Data view shows the specific data frame that is highlight , layout view shows all the data frames for that particular map exercise.

2. Using correct ArcGIS terminology, explain what part of a map is exported as an image file when you choose the File-Export Map option. Also, how is an exported Layout view different from an exported Data view?
The ArcMap application window is all that gets exported as an image, not including the table of contents or toolbars. An exported layout view shows all of the data frames, and an exported data view shows only the selected data fram and it's layers.

3. What is the difference between a DATA FRAME and a LAYER?
A data frame usually has a title that describes what the entire map will show, such as Topography or Wildlife. It also includes every necessary layer, which is a subset of the map, that distinguishes each feature making the map come to life.

4. What step(s) would you follow to switch between display of the Countries map and the Rivers map in Exercise 5b?
Go to View; Layout View, click the Data Frame title display that you want to see whether it is switching to Countries or Rivers, and then click View; Data View. OR in the table of contents click the minus next to the title of the map you are currently viewing and then right click the title of the map you want to look at and click Activate.

5. What step(s) would you follow to display the names of features as labels on the map (such as the Mexican states in Exercise 7a)?
Right click the feature which you want to see the names of then scroll down and click Label Features. This automatically places their names wherever the default position is set to, sometimes the center or upper right.

6. What step(s) would you follow to change the colors of the Mexican states in Exercise 7a to a unique color for each state?
In the table of contents right click the Southeastern States layer and then click Properties.  In the Properties dialog click the Symbology tab. In the show box click Categories and make sure the Value Field drop-down list is set to name, then click add all values. Then on the right find a color scheme you like and then click OK.

7. What is the difference between a ".mxd" file and a ".mxt" file?
A ".mxd" file stands for ArcMap Document and a ".mxt" file stands for ArcMap Template.

8. What is the difference between a SHAPEFILE (.shp) and a LAYER FILE (.lyr)?
Shape files are feature classes that go into layers to help symbolize or characterize the data and information within each layer.
